My English learning story
My father was interested in abroad traveling and he had some guide books for traveling and daily dialog in Turkish, English and Japanese languages. They had lots of funny pictures. I was 5 or 6 years old and though I couldn’t read them but really enjoyed watching them. The most interested pictures belonged to English books. I still remember the picture of a doctor who wanted to pour some drugs into the throat of a patient through the funnel; the doctor had fastened him to an armchair not to escape.
From those days learning English became one of my future goals. Later when I found out that English is an international language and you can communicate with a huge number of people in different parts of the world, my interest grew stronger.
My start point was school lessons. Learning English words and simple sentences was interesting and caused me believe that my dream is coming true. When our real and serious lessons started with short stories, I was excited. I bought audio tape of my book to learn the correct pronunciation. Learning English with audio file was the most interesting part of my student life. I didn’t feel that I’m studying, I just enjoyed. When my teacher wanted to check my learning for the first time, my reading and translating was excellent but when she asked some questions about grammar rules and vocabulary, I couldn’t answer at all. She checked my book to see if I wrote the translation in my book! And when she found the book clean, she was shocked! And asked me the reason, but I had no answer! I got the half mark that day and it repeated for next lessons and exams. I couldn’t understand why we had to learn the Persian meaning of each vocabulary, word by word, while we could understand them better in the sentence or passage.
I lost my interest to learn English but I still enjoyed listening and reading. I bought some graded story books with audio tape. I used to listen them with closed eyes and try to imagine the story. I enjoyed them as well as the best music and even more. This was my only attempt for learning English.
Last year I took a test in an English training institute to check my level and I got the grade intermediate. Examiner admired my listening and speaking, but he didn’t know that I couldn’t recognize a noun from an adjective or adverb. I even didn’t know what kind of verb tenses I use in my speaking. I just used them because I thought they must be used in this way. I myself thought it’s too bad and there is something wrong with me.
Two months ago I attended in my first academic English class in order to boost my learning. but I was shocked when I figured out that the students who had spend many years for learning English in the academic way were worse than me in speaking or even grammar… I found out that’s a waste of time and money. I also figured out if I had a serious study and a regular plan to learn English in my own approach, I would succeed. So I abandoned the class and fortunately I spotted with an awesome app named “zaban-shenas” a few days ago and now I’m here
