Uncle Sam: یکی از اصطلاحات بومی امریکاست
عمو سام نماد شخصیتی ایالات متحده آمریکا است و از سال ۱۸۱۲ میلادی تا کنون مورد استفاده بوده است.
در مورد این که شخصیت عموسام خلق شده یا واقعا وجود داشته‌است. اختلاف نظر وجود دارد اما اکثرا بر این باورند که این نماد ملهم از شخصی به نام ساموئل ویلسون(Samuel Wilson) است.
درخلال جنگ ۱۸۱۲ ویلسون به شغل قصابی و بسته بندی گوشت اشتغال داشت. او محموله‌های عظیم گوشت را برای ارتش آمریکا مهیا میکرد.بر روی این گوشتها حروف ابتدایی ایالات متحده U.S مهر زده می شد. ماجرا از آنجا آغاز شد که روزی یکی از سربازان آمریکایی بعد از دیدن این آرم به شوخی گفت : این گوشتها از طرف عمو سام (Uncle Sam) آمده و به همین دلیل علامت اختصاری خودش را U.S. را بر روی آن زده است. کم کم این شوخی در بین سربازان آمریکایی رواج یافت و این نام نیز به ساموئل اطلاق شد. ساموئل ویلسون در ۱۸۵۴ از دنیا رفت. مدفن او در گورستان Oakwood در تروی است.
آنچه که امروزه به صورت مردی با ریش بزی سفید و لباس ستاره دار نشانه عموسام دانسته می شود با تصویر ویلسون شباهت چندانی ندارد
اما در سال ۱۹۶۱ کنگره آمریکا عنوان عموسام را برای ساموئل به رسمیت شناخت و عمو سام را که پیشتر در بین آمریکایی ها شهرت بسیار به دست آورده بود را به عنوان یک سمبل ملی شناخت.
اما به مرور هنرمندان و نقاشان در تصویر ساموئل دست بردند و آنچه که امروزه به صورت مردی با ریش بزی سفید و لباس ستاره دار نشانه عموسام دانسته می شود با تصویر ویلسون شباهت چندانی ندارد.
